Homecare Levittown, PA: Memory Loss

If your elderly loved one has forgotten your name, it is important that you don’t give up on them. Keeping doing all that you can to take care of them and love them. Be sensitive to what they are going through. People who have these types of diseases can’t help what happens with their memory loss. They didn’t forget your name on purpose. It doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to be around you. In fact, losing you in their life could make things so much more difficult for them.

Using Sensory Cues

Forgetting your name isn’t the end for your elderly loved one. This does not mean that they will never remember your name again. In some cases, people with these types of diseases need some sensory cues to remember certain things. For example, if you talk to your loved one, they might recognize your voice and then remember your name. If you hug them, they might smell your cologne or perfume and be able to recall your name from that smell.

Engaging Your Elderly Loved One

Another way that you can help your elderly loved one is to engage them. You can show them photographs of you and them doing something. This could spark their memory and help them to remember your name. You can arrange pictures of you and your loved one in chronological order. By seeing the progression of pictures, something might be able to spark their memory. By seeing the timeline, your elderly loved one might not recognize you from recently, but they might recognize you in the pictures from 5, 10, or 20 years ago.

Taking care of someone who has a neurological degenerative condition can be difficult at times. If your elderly loved one has forgotten your name, do your best not to take it personally. They can’t control their memory loss. If you follow these tips, you might be able to stimulate your loved one’s mind and they could remember your name. If they still can’t remember your name, just do your best to keep providing them with the care that they need.
